The Promenade des Guinguettes at Rochetaillée-sur-Saône

Discover the delights of the banks of the Saône

Laid out in 2015, the Promenade des Guinguettes at Rochetaillée-sur-Saône, a characterful village 10km from Lyon, offers activities for people of all ages, allowing you to share in the wonderful atmosphere here, perhaps with family or friends. The towpath naturally encourages you to wander along or relax, as it’s dotted with beaches and picnic areas. In addition, you’ll find many restaurants with terraces by the water, places to stop for a drink or a meal, trying regional specialities such as frogs’ legs or fried river fish.

Nearby, the steep village streets lead up to the château, home to the Musée de l’Automobile Henri Malartre, the grounds here offering exceptional views over the Saône Valley. The castle’s collections plunge you into the history of the motor car, of public transport and of cycling, with some remarkable items on display.

On this La Voie Bleue stage, savour the last stretch of the Saône before it joins the Rhône. From Trévoux to Lyon, southern capital of French gastronomy, enjoy views of the Monts d’Or hills and the Saône’s holiday atmosphere, with its waterside restaurants and nautical activities. Entering Lyon, the riverbanks are well laid out. Finally, you come to the Saône’s confluence with the Rhône, marking a sensational end to your cycling adventure, or a stopping point before continuing to the Mediterranean on the ViaRhôna cycle route. Lyon’s contemporary Confluence Quarter stands out for its funky architecture and cultural venues, adding a new facet to this city whose historic quarters have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Seek out a fine restaurant, maybe a traditional Bouchon Lyonnais, and make the most of the innumerable activities on offer in France’s third-largest city.
